Big Business at Salford City Academy

Groups of Year 9 and 10 students are currently focusing on the Mosaic Enterprise Challenge project; a two-week programme, which aims to test their business skills.

Working in teams and aided by mentors from local business PZ Cussons, the students have set up businesses through an online game and must make the highest net profit to qualify for the regional, inter-school final in March.

Teams must create a sustainable business making marketing, financial and production decisions.

They have picked a product – a laptop, phone, diamond ring or iPod – and then taken it to market, managing sales and marketing spend, demand and competitors.  The game asks them to trade for a 3 year period and explain all their decision-making to show their understanding.

Abi Lomax from PZ Cussons said:

“Based on how well the teams do in the business game determines if they reach the finals. All the PZ Cussons mentors working with students are from our Sales, Marketing and Finance teams, so they have the best guidance.”

The regional finals asks qualifying teams to present a social enterprise business idea to a panel of judges.

Winning teams then move on to the grand final and a chance to win £2,500 to finance their business project.
