Careers Fair

On Friday 10th January 2014, Salford City Academy held a careers event for all students from Year 7 through to Sixth Form.

There were 19 displays from Employers, Training Providers, Colleges and Universities including Salford and Manchester Colleges, Salford Royal Hospital, Army, 2 Companies from Media City, Skills Solutions and many more.  These included a number of interactive stands, where students could have a go at controlling a remote control fork lift truck, cake decorating, hair dressing and massaging.

The students attended the Careers Fair in whole year groups for an hour, giving them enough time to speak as many people as they wanted to about their future, whether it would be a college course, placement or an apprenticeship.  All of the stands were very busy during each session, giving advice and guidance to all the students and handing them leaflets and information packs for them to look at after the event.  Some students were unsure of who or what they wanted to do, so they were directed over to the Connexions Advisor to talk about possible options for the future.

Students in Years 10 and 11 found the event very informative, giving them a chance to look at and consider their choices for the future, if they haven’t already decided.  For the younger students, it was a good opportunity to think about option choices and ask questions about courses, apprenticeships or careers they may be considering.

Caroline Todd, from Dock10 MediaCity said:

“Students were engaged, interested and asked good questions. The Careers Fair was a great opportunity to reinforce the importance of working hard for GCSEs”.

Charlie Rushworth, Year 8 said:

“Though it was scary just walking up and talking, I found out so much more when I asked questions.”

Mrs Burgess, Head of Careers said:

“This is the first time that all the students at Salford City Academy attended the careers event and we are really pleased with how well it went, with fantastic comments from the students and the visitors.  We will definitely be doing this again with all the students."
