Debate Mate Debut

Salford City Academy has launched a programme called Debate Mate, which is running in conjunction with the University of Manchester.

This is a fantastic programme and will play an important part in the success of the students involved, both at School and in their future.  It serves as an introduction to debating and involves fun and exciting ways of developing communication, leadership and teamwork skills.

Debate Mate consists of 16, 1 hour after-school debating sessions delivered by a trained University student and supported Academy teaching staff.  It will run from November 2014 until to April next year.

Gifted and Talented students have been selected for this stimulating programme and have attended the first exciting session!  26 Year 7 – 9 students took part in the interactive session, which used games to encourage team working, confidence building and, ultimately, development of speaking and listening skills.

Positive feedback from the students in the first session included “it was a good experience!” from one, and “it’s been fun” from another, and also “we learnt good communication skills.”
