Primaries join Salford City Academy for Technology Festivals

From boat building to making their own Chow mein, primary pupils went ‘hands on’ when visiting Salford City Academy.

Last week saw Year 5 children from Christchurch Primary School visit the academy for its latest technology festival, with the young visitors learning how to safely use hand tools and machines to create their own elastic band powered boat.

For many, it was their first opportunity to use saws, chisels and sanding machines, with the pupils then testing out their creations in a boat race. All those taking part were also awarded a certificate of achievement.

The day included pupils preparing their own Chow mein, chopping and cooking ingredients, washing up equipment and finally tasting their creations!  The academy’s Sixth Form Hospitality students assisted as pupils learnt about health and safety in the classroom.

Pupils from Westwood Park Primary School also visited the Peel Green based academy recently for a day of hands-on catering and resistant materials activities.

Salford City Academy’s Transition Co-ordinator Rachel Lyons said:

“The aim of these vocational events was to give our primary pupils an opportunity to experience and learn practical skills in a secondary setting.  For many, these were new tasks and it was fantastic to see the children enjoying the ‘end results’ of their own work, be it eating their Chow mein or racing each other with their boats”
