Salford City Academy celebrate Roald Dahl Day

The weird and wonderful world of children’s writer Roald Dahl was top of the menu at Salford City Academy, as students marked his 100th anniversary yesterday.

Born on the 13th September 1916 and creator of such classics as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach and the BFG, the late author’s work was celebrated across the world as part of ‘Roald Dahl Day.’

Joining in the fun were students and staff at the Peel Green school, with themed activities including:

  • Performing as characters in ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ and using creative writing to compose their own ‘George’s Marvellous Medicine’ in English lessons;
  • Composing songs on the xylophone from films based on the author’s books in music lessons;
  • Designing ‘Willy Wonka’ chocolate bars and drawing a portrait of the BFG in art;
  • Taking part in Roald Dahl word searches and quizzes in the library, with prizes of vouchers and gobstoppers!

Co-ordinated by the academy’s Literacy co-ordinator Lynsey Wright and Learning Resource Centre Manager Debbie Wilkinson, the day even featured an inspired menu in the school canteen, featuring Matilda’s Mouthful spicy tomato soup (too hot for Miss Trunchbull!) and the Chocolate Factory dessert - rich chocolate sponge with a river of chocolate sauce.

Executive Principal Helen Mackenzie OBE said:

“The stories of Roald Dahl are timeless and can be found in classrooms and school libraries around the world, so we were delighted to take part in and support such a fantastic event.”
