SCA Spreads the Warmth

Internal Filler

Salford City Academy staff and students pulled together recently to answer ITV Daybreak's Donate a Coat Appeal for The Salvation Army.

In response to the ITV breakfast show's appeal, the Academy encouraged everyone to give back to their community by donating their unwanted coats to help spread the warmth to those less fortunate through the winter months.

Year 7 student Mark Gannon saw the appeal and suggested to staff that it would be perfect for the Academy's next community effort.

Mark Gannon, Year 7, said:

"I thought it was a great idea to collect coats for people who need them.  They've also asked everyone to write letters too; so I'm writing letters to put in the sleeves of the coats I'm donating to wish the people receiving them a Happy Christmas and New Year."

Salford City Academy's community team are co-ordinating the appeal and collecting coats for the homeless, low income and elderly members within the local area.  The coats collected so far have been taken to a nearby dedicated Salvation Army drop-off point.

Salford City Academy's Extended Schools Co-ordinator Lyndsey Hulme said:

"The Academy has a great sense of community spirit and is really rallying together to donate a heap of coats for the appeal! So far we have collected 50 coats and we are delighted that they will be fed right back into our local community."

"We have a School Community Action programme which encourages our students to give their time and get involved with the local community. We really feel the impact of this throughout the Academy and we are so proud of Mark's show of initiative and support of the appeal."

Lieutenant Jon Bishton, who leads the Eccles branch of The Salvation Army alongside his wife, Lieutenant Jane Bishton said:

"On behalf of The Salvation Army across the greater Manchester area, we would like thank Salford City Academy for their hard work and dedication in collecting and donating to us.  We are delighted to receive this generous donation of coats, which will help lots of vulnerable people around Salford and Manchester stay warmer this winter.  Thank you for helping us make a real difference to local peoples' lives this Christmas and into the New Year."
