Year 9 attend a mental health awareness workshop

Year 9 attended a special assembly this morning which featured a dramatic performance by Odd Arts.  The play addressed the pressures and difficulties faced by teenagers and the impact on their mental health.

The three year project funded by the NHS aims to address mental health and self-harm, important issues raised by young adults as something they want more information and support with.

42nd Street (www.42ndstreet.org.uk) were also in attendance; they are a local charity that provides free and confidential services to young people who are under stress or experiencing mental health difficulties.

Following the thought-provoking play with the message that ‘it’s never too late to ask for help’, students took part in workshops to give them an opportunity to reflect on the issues raised.

First, students noted the pressures and difficulties they face including bereavement, ‘celebrity and media’, bullying and anxiety.

They then talked through how to find support and strength through a range of avenues from friends, family and teachers, to organisations such as CAMHS and 42nd street, and positive strategies such as getting enough sleep, exercising and having fun.

Head of Year, Sarah Robinson said:

“The assembly was fantastic and it encouraged our students to think about and share any pressures they face, but also positive strategies for seeking help and addressing issues.”
