Science Scouts get the "Big Bang Theory" at SCA

Local scouts enjoyed an evening of whooshes, bangs and ice cream when Salford City Academy hosted a ‘Mad Science Evening’ on Thursday 26th June.
Beavers, cubs and scouts from the 3rd/1st Eccles Scout Group, based in Watson Street in Patricoft, watched a spectacular show from academy science teacher Mr Moktar, before having the chance to make their own ice cream.
The scouts, aged 6-14, enjoyed interactive demonstrations, including Mr Moktar showing the audience the power of dry ice by freezing a flower in a few seconds. The audience also watched exploding hydrogen-filled balloons, “whoosh” bottles and an experiment using a “magic wand” dipped in chemicals. The show was designed to demonstrate to the children that the special effects used in films are not magic, but science!
The evening also supported the youngsters as they work towards achieving their Scout Challenge Badge - part of Greater Manchester West Scouts’ “Challenge” programme, designed to encourage scout groups to work together.
Madison Baker, aged 9, a cub who attended the Mad Science Evening, said:
“It was amazing when we got to touch the bubbles from the dry ice, and they turned to steam!”
Sharon Irving, leader of the 3rd/1st Eccles Scout Group, said:
“What a fantastic evening; Mr Moktar truly was the mad scientist. I would like to thank the British Oxygen Company for their support with the dry ice, which the children loved. It was wonderful to see them so enthused and excited by science.”
