Salford City Academy students join forces with Chat Moss Project

Salford City Academy students have been going eco-friendly, supporting conservation activities at a local wildlife haven.

The students have spent the last few weeks working with the Chat Moss Project to help tackle the sinking bog, building bridges and erecting willow fences and dens and encountering the local wildlife in the process, including lizards, snakes, dragonflies, butterflies, newts, water voles and a wide variety of wetland birds.

Participation in the project has also helped the young environmentalists develop their team building and communication skills, in an alternative outdoor setting.

Commented Jon Ritchie, Alternative Provision Manager at Salford City Academy:

“Our students have really enjoyed the experience, particularly the opportunity to explore and learn about their surroundings in a fantastic open air ‘classroom.”

Added Year 7 student, Shyan:

“It’s been good working in the mud! We’ve been building bridges and taking part in a ‘capture the flag’ activity – all as a team. I was really excited after our first visit and couldn’t wait to go back.”

The academy’s support has also been welcomed by the Chat Moss Project, which is seeking to raise the profile of the wetlands through community engagement.

Commented Lydia McCool, the Project’s Community Engagement Officer:

“Our aim is to inspire local people to visit and experience the site, helping them to appreciate the importance of this natural space within the Salford area. In support of this, we're offering free education and enrichment sessions for schools and activities for community groups, as well as a substantial volunteering and training programme, featuring family orientated events taking place throughout the school holidays.”
