Science Festival for local primary schools held at Salford City Academy

On Wednesday 11th November, Salford City Academy invited Year 5 pupils from local primary schools for a day of ‘Exciting Explosions’, as part of its Science Festival activities which are being held throughout November.

The first festival saw Eccles primary schools St Andrews and Barton Moss join the academy for a day of exciting science experiments.  The pupils became ‘Flaming Experts’ by learning how to safely handle fire, Bunsen burners, chemicals and other scientific equipment in the laboratories.

Academy science teachers then demonstrated how to make sparklers and how fireworks become colourful, with pupils using various chemicals to create and observe colour changes in a flame.

Finally, the labs became noisier as pupils learnt how to make big bangs with another, even stronger chemical reaction!

The pupils were then awarded a certificate of achievement for their work in the labs.

Alisa, Year 5 said:

“I enjoyed making colourful flames.  I’ve never done that before!”

Fletcher, Year 5 said:

“We learnt how to make our own sparklers; it was really exciting.”

Rachel Lyons, Transition Co-ordinator at Salford City Academy, said:

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for these primary children to get a taste of secondary curriculum science, as well as the academy.  It was wonderful to see their enthusiasm in the classroom; they all made great scientists!”
