At Salford City Academy we place a great deal of emphasis on reading because we know that a child's reading age and habit is a significant contributing factor to their academic success at school and in the world beyond. Usually, we assess your child’s reading age regularly through both National Group Reading Tests, and in Accelerated Reader diagnostic tests, to ensure your child is reading at an appropriate level: ideally this should be within 6 months of their chronological age or above.
We ask all parents/carers to support our ethos around reading at home by ensuring your child reads for 20 minutes every day; this could be independent reading, reading to a family member or reading online through our new ‘MyON’ platform which has 6,000 books available, many with audio narration. Staff will be setting reading for their subject on this platform too, so please ensure your child knows how to access this website: you can watch this video with information about how to below:

We are also extremely proud of our DEAR programme at Salford City Academy (Drop Everything And Read or Revise if you are a Year 11 student). At the end of each school day, students, with their tutor, participate in a research-based reading programme where teachers model reading to students as well as using other strategies proven to develop an individual's reading ability.
NOTE: During this period of lockdown, students are reading with their tutor in the morning using a fantastic news platform called 'The Day', subsequently we are asking students to use MyON at the end of each school day to read independently for 20 minutes: many of the books have audio narration if your child prefers this option.
