New initiative helps put students on fast track to reading success

Salford City Academy is helping put its students on the fast track to success with its Accelerated Reading initiative.  Originally trialled with Years 7, 8 and 9 last year, the scheme uses a special software programme to monitor student’s reading progress, testing them on the books they have read and identifying future text to help them develop their reading skills.

Debbie Wilkinson, Learning Resources Manager, explains:  “Thanks to the scheme, we are able to accurately assess individual students’ reading levels and then set them the appropriate text to help them progress to the next level of their reading.”

Those taking part in the scheme start off as Ready Readers, progressing through 7 different levels to Classic Reader.

Parents are encouraged to support the Accelerated Reading programme at home, whilst back at the academy the scheme has now been extended to include support staff, who sit in on classes to ensure each child has the opportunity to read on a one-to-one basis with a member of the Academy team.
