Great Schools Bake-Off

Junior members of Salford City Academy's Primary After-School Club won the ‘Great British Bake-Off' at the annual Cake and Bake Show at Manchester Central.

Junior members of Salford City Academy's Primary After-School Club won the ‘Great British Bake-Off' at the annual Cake and Bake Show at Manchester Central.

Mason Hodgins aged 10 and Harry Harwood, also 10, from Beech Street Primary School take part in Salford City Academy's after school cookery club and put their new skills to good use when representing the club to take part in the competition.

Organised by Grain Chain and judged by spokesperson and celebrity baker Paul Hollywood, the ‘Bake-Off' saw pupils from primary and secondary schools across the North West compete in a series of heats, with the best bakers then competing in the grand final for the title of ‘Star Baker!'

Budding bakers Mason and Harry first worked with the Academy's after-school bakery club organiser Julie Larkinson during the Easter holidays to bake their Citrus Twirl Gateaux before joining the live qualifying heats in front of the Cake and Bake Show audience.

After explaining the recipe and how they had decorated the cake to baking legend Paul Hollywood, it was time for the taste test, with Mason and Harry both making it through to the grand final where they competed against students from a Congleton secondary school.

In the style of the BBC2 TV baking show, competitors were challenged to make, bake and present a Paul Hollywood scone recipe to the man himself.

Said Julie Larkinson:

"It was a fantastic achievement for Mason and Harry to win the overall Great Schools Bake-Off title and trophy.  They showed great confidence when talking to Paul Hollywood and worked well on the own initiative in the final challenge. The judges were extremely impressed with their baking."

Both Mason and Harry were thrilled to win and meet Paul Hollywood.

Harry said: "When I met Paul Hollywood, I felt speechless. I wanted to get his phone number because he is so famous!" and Mason agreed: "Meeting Paul was one of the greatest moments of my life. I wish I could meet him again."
