Salford City Academy students were asked to listen and learn when they took part in a Speaking and Listening Action Day (SALAD).

The Academy organised a full day where all learning and assessment took place through speaking and listening, rather than writing.

Whole School Literacy Co-ordinator at Salford City Academy, Carol Murray, said:

“At Salford City Academy we believe that speech, language and communication skills underpin everything that we do, as well as directly affecting our students’ life chances. For this reason we organised SALAD, with the focus very much on speaking and listening activities, including maths games, role plays and practical tasks.”

Aimed at all year groups, including the Academy’s Sixth Form, the event saw the Academy’s different departments arrange lessons with specific speaking and listening objectives, helping to promote speech, language and communication development. Staff also utilised partner, team and presentation based work to engage students and encourage them to reflect on their own learning throughout.

Year 8 student Oliver Lefley, said:

“The whole event has been great fun. We had the chance to act in Geography, play the ‘hot seat game’ in French and sing in Music!”

A Year 9 press team also toured the Academy recording all the action, taking photos and interviewing staff and students. The event ended with a Year 8 performance of Romeo and Juliet.

Principal Helen Mackenzie, OBE, said:

“Whole school literacy is a key focus for Salford City Academy. Our SALAD event gave students a wonderful opportunity to develop and build on their essential oracy and listening skills in a fun and encouraging way. There was a real ‘buzz’ in all classes as students engaged in a wide array of interactive work.”
