Students and staff at Salford City Academy are celebrating after receiving a ‘Good’ Ofsted report, having previously been rated ‘Inadequate’.

Inspectors praised the rapidly improving quality of teaching, the progress underway at all key stages and the “inspiring and firm lead” of Principal Helen Mackenzie and her team who are “driving strong and decisive action… to address areas for improvement”.

The report highlights a number of key successes:

  • “Senior leaders are effective and determined to make a difference to students’ lives.”
  •  “There is a tidal change in attitudes to poor attendance and punctuality among staff and students.”
  • “Inventive approaches to strengthen reading and writing in literacy are used across the academy, resulting in students making great strides in their phonic and reading development.”
  •  “The academy provides well-structured care and support and is exemplary in its approach to keeping students safe.”
  • “Engagement between parents and teachers… is now blossoming.”

Inspectors say that students are equipped to be “thoughtful, caring and active citizens in the academy and wider society” and that they take pride in their uniform and their school. The report also praises the advice and support from staff to ensure students’ next steps in education, training or employment are successful.

Mrs Helen Mackenzie OBE, Principal at Salford City Academy, said:

This report is highly encouraging and something that everyone – students, staff, parents and governors alike – should be proud of. It is gratifying that inspectors have recognised the significant progress that we all know has been underway at the academy and reflected this in such a strong report.

“I would like to congratulate and thank staff and students for all their hard work and determination in helping us achieve this.”

Janet Woods, Director of Northern Academies for United Learning, the school’s sponsor, said:

This ‘Good’ judgement from Ofsted is testament to the dedication and ambition of all staff and students, under the strong leadership of Principal Helen Mackenzie and her team.

“The report clearly demonstrates how far the school has come since its last inspection and, with solid foundations in teaching and learning now in place, the academy is well positioned to aim for even higher quality, outstanding practice.
