We are delighted to introduce our new Year 7 librarians, currently enjoying training with the Year 8 team.

Our Year 7 students have been training since September and will start their duties independently this term.

The Academy has always recruited students as librarians to staff the library under the watchful eye of Learning Resources Manager, Mrs Wilkinson, and each September we are delighted to receive applications from our new Year 7s.

Every year we have an excellent response from students wanting to become Junior Librarians. They each have to fill in an application form, telling us about themselves, their interest in books and reading, and any previous librarian experience in primary school.

The Academy’s older librarians interview the Year 7 applicants.  Once elected the induction process begins and our successful recruits are then partnered with a Year 8 librarian.  They are introduced to the library and daily duties such as desk duties from handing out library passes, lending books to students, cataloguing books and also the ‘Check and Ranger’ system, which monitors the library computers and ensures students are not on unauthorised websites.

Mrs Wilkinson, Learning Resources Manager said:

“Becoming a Junior Librarian helps ours students with their confidence and encourages them to mix with other students of all years.  All of them learn a lot from working in the library and enjoy the responsibilities.”

“It makes me proud to see those that have started with me in Year 7, work in the library till Year 10 in time to prepare for study and exams in Year 11.  Even those that move on into Sixth Form still come over to visit and help in library!”

Lucie Welby, Year 7, said:

“I’m a librarian (in training) at Salford City Academy and I like being taught by Precious who is a Year 8 librarian.  I have learnt a lot at about running the library desk and also about books as well.  I like being a librarian and reading; it helps me a lot in life and especially in school.”
