Students Find Their Voice

Debate Mate returns!

Debate Mate’s second cohort of students have begun their after school training to take part in the scheme, delivered by the University of Manchester.

This year, the academy accepted applications from all students and we now have 22 on roll.

Sarah Shah and Sarah Moth-Lund Christensen from University of Manchester joined the students for a fun and lively session of warm-up exercises and team-building activities.

Megan Travis, Year 8, said:

“I took part last year and it helped me to project my voice; I even did a speech to parents at Open Evening! Debate Mate has made me feel more confident.”

The programme serves as an introduction to debating and involves fun and exciting ways of developing communication, leadership and teamwork skills.

The Debate Mate programme consists of 16, 1 hour after-school debating sessions delivered by trained University students and supported by Academy teaching staff, as well as competitions involving other schools.  It will run from November 2014 until to April next year.
