Salford City Academy students help launch national app competition

Last week, students and staff from Salford City Academy helped launch #UnitedApp2017, a national competition which tasks students with generating educational app ideas that could have a global impact.

The competition is being run by United Learning, the schools group which Salford City Academy is a part of, and 7billionideas. It is open to Year 9 students across the country from United Learning’s state academies and independent schools.

Salford City Academy was the venue for one of the competition’s first roadshow events, which saw students treated to a presentation from 7billionideas staff who inspired everyone to start thinking about their app ideas and gave them some tips on where to start.

The students will now work in small teams to come up with their unique educational app proposals, with the aim of being shortlisted for the final. The winning app idea will be fully designed and launched in the App Store next year.

Victoria Russell-Robbins, Head of Pupil Enrichment at United Learning said:

“We are very excited to be partnering with 7billionideas again to launch #UnitedApp2017 through these roadshows around the country. With the competition now in its third year, I know that students in schools across the Group are eager to get to work developing their app ideas in the hope of joining Nova Hreod Academy and Greenacre School as competition winners.

“In previous years, we have been overwhelmed by the positive comments from students and staff about how much they have enjoyed taking part and the impact which it has had in terms of developing leadership and entrepreneurship. We hope that this year’s Year 9s at Salford City Academy will find it just as valuable.”
