Cambridge University Taster Day Whets The Appetite For SCA Year 10s

A group of our Year 10s spent the day at Cambridge University, where they gained an insight into what it is like to study at one of the country’s most prestigious educational establishments.

It was an early start for the students, who set off from the Academy with Head of English Mr Barker at 6.15am! However, after a long journey south they arrived at the Murray Edwards College campus ready to make the most of the day.

Their hosts had plenty planned throughout the visit, and our group had the opportunity to get involved in several workshops. In a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) session, students worked with their peers from other schools to create the Murray Edwards dome building out of straws.

Later, they also participated in a Humanities and English workshop, which involved them debating on contentious issues such as whether or not prisoners deserve the right to vote and if secular societies should have control over people’s religious beliefs.

Of course, their visit would not have been complete without a tour of the campus. Students were shown around the college library, accommodation and the bar before enjoying a meal in the famous dome.

Mr Barker said: “We had an amazing day and I can’t thank the staff at Murray Edwards College and Cambridge University enough for making us feel so welcome. Our students behaved in an exemplary manner, displayed a perfect attitude throughout the entire day and were a credit to SCA.

“After seeing what life is like at Cambridge they are all really keen to apply after their GCSEs and A-Levels and I’m really excited for what their future holds. We are incredibly grateful for the excellent work being completed by GM Higher to ensure that schools in Greater Manchester have the means to take advantage of these fabulous opportunities.

“Next week, Cambridge University staff will visit our Key Stage 3 students as part of a growing link between our two organisations and so I can’t see this being our last trip to their campus!”
