Salford City Academy Celebrate World Of Literature As Part Of World Book Day

This week, students and staff at Salford City Academy immersed themselves in a world of literature, enjoying a day of educational challenges to celebrate World Book Day.

Across the academy, students and teachers made the most of the reading festival by coming into school dressed in costumes based on characters from works of fiction. This helped to spark some interesting discussions about their favourite books and authors and set students up well for the day of exciting book-themed activities and challenges that followed.

In the Library, students in every year group took part in a special literacy quiz to test their knowledge of books and illustrations in order to win the wand from the Warner Bros. Harry Potter Tour – London and a selection of books.

Later, in one of most popular activities of the day, students got the chance to take part SCA’s very own Reading Challenge – to read at least one book from a category given to them, record it on the back of a challenge card giving it a rating and review. Many students were lucky winners of their very own Kindle for completing this quest. The Reading Challenge was designed to encourage students to read something completely new, expanding their literary knowledge further by selecting a different genre of book to try.

Students also enjoy extended ‘Drop Everything and Read’ (DEAR) time throughout the day, giving them the chance to immerse themselves in a book and take the time to read for pleasure. This dedicated slot for reading was accompanied by a competition where students were challenged to write about their book, with prizes on offer for the most creative and considered entries.

Giving students the opportunity to take part in fun and educational experiences like this forms part of Salford City Academy’s commitment to deliver an Education with Character to all its young people. This means that alongside helping students to achieve their best academically, staff strive to deliver a well-rounded, enriching education and develop in students a love of learning.

Melanie Haselden, Principal of Salford City Academy, said:

Every year World Book Day is a highlight of our academic year that brings our curriculum to life for our students and open their eyes to the vibrant range of books and authors out there across the world. Seeing so many of our students enjoying the day’s activities and leaving school feeling inspired to read even more is exactly what this day is all about.

“The activities and challenges arranged by our staff have been a fantastic example of what it means to deliver an Education with Character. One that raises our student’s aspirations as we continue to offer more and more opportunities to develop their learning and literacy skills.
