'A Spiralling Mind'

Year 9 mental health workshop

The NHS Commissioning Group visited the academy today accompanied by Oddarts drama company to address issues relating to young people’s emotional health and wellbeing.

When consulted, young people have told the NHS that the issues which affect them the most are mental health, self-harm and eating disorders.

To help address these key issues and to signpost help and support, Salford City Academy Year 9 students watched a drama performance and then participated in a workshop to discuss the topics raised.

The performance was emotive and students were very open when talking about the feelings and issues involving the characters’ mental health.

Year 9 student Marta said: “The play was great; it was a good way of getting the message across to not be afraid to tell someone if you need help.”

They then moved on to discuss ideas about how young people can tackle problems and seek support from friends, family, teachers and support services.

Fellow student Chloe added: “I thought the discussion was good and putting all our ideas into a bucket showed everyone was listening.  There were lots of ideas about who to tell and where to get help.”

Vice Principal Jacqui House commented on the workshop:

“I was impressed because the students engaged in the workshop and responded well.  It provoked a lot of thought and discussion throughout and afterwards.”
