Equalities workshop for Year 8 and 9

Salford CVS and Police Crime Commissioner supports arts company Art with Heart to deliver Equalities workshops at Salford City Academy for Hate Crime Awareness Week.

Award-winning arts company Art with Heart visited students at Salford City Academy to explore equality and discrimination for Hate Crime Awareness week on 9th and 10th of February.

The thought-provoking workshop was born out of a need for open, safe and eloquent dialogue around issues of discrimination and bullying and has been informed by recent research conducted by anti-bullying charity Ditch the Label. Research collected showed that over 1.5 million young people (50%) have been bullied within the past year, with 145,800 (19%) of these were bullied every day.

Stockport born Rachel Moorhouse of Art with Heart says: “We do a huge amount of work with young people and see the devastating impact that bullying has on their health, behaviour and self-esteem. Our workshops will offer young people the freedom and opportunity to explore what discrimination and equality mean, who they are, what they want their world to look like and how to make change happen.”

Police and Crime Commissioner Tony Lloyd says: “Today’s bullying is tomorrow’s hate crime. Exploring issues of equality, discrimination and tolerance is vital.”

As part of the initiative, which is also being run with other schools across Greater Manchester, Art with Heart visited Salford City Academy on the 9th and 10th February to hold a series of equality workshops with students from Years 8 and 9.

Commented the academy’s Head of School, Victoria Birchwood:

“This is an incredibly important topic and one we are pleased to be supporting through our work with Art with Heart.”

Year 8 student Erin Welsh said:

“I thought it was amazing to learn all about acceptance and LGBTQ history. It was good to hear how things have changed for the better and how this has helped improve other people’s confidence.”
