Debate Mate Recruitment

This week, Salford City Academy is looking to recruit our next cohort of Debate Mate students!

Debate Mate is a club held after school one day a week where students learn how to debate about topics in our world today and enables them to find and have a voice about things they may feel passionate about, but also listened to.

Salford City Academy teachers have seen a big difference in the pupils who have attended Debate Mate this year.  We asked our students what they enjoyed most about taking part and they said:

The competitions were really good against other schools.”

“Learning how to debate properly.”

Working with different people.”

“Developing my confidence.”

“The subjects we covered.”

We also asked students if Debate Mate helped them to develop their confidence and speaking and listening skills and they said:

“I feel more confident to speak to people I don’t know.”

“I feel I listen to other people more now rather than just wanting to have my own opinion.”

“I feel more confident speaking in public now.”

“I feel I can respond quicker to people.”

“I have an opinion and feel confident to back up my opinion.”

Finally, we asked them how they think Debate Mate will help them in the future and they answered:

“I will be more sociable.”

“I will be more confident talking to others.”

“I have a wider more open view of the world.”

“It will boost my confidence.”

“Being able to argue my point in certain situations.”

“It will help me get a job and help me with talking in the interviews.”

“I will be able to present better to others.”

There are just 25 places - 10 of these have already been given to current members.  If students are interested, then they must complete an application form and hand it into the main office from 15th-26th June 2015.  They will be notified of the decision week beginning 29th June 2015 and invited to a launch meeting. Good luck!
