Medical professionals visit for a STEMM Subjects and Careers Talk

Surgeon Leela Biant and Physiotherapist Justine Theaker visited Salford City Academy today to discuss the opportunities for students in STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths and Medicine) subjects and careers.

To help students make the link between what they study in the classroom and what opportunities there are in the world of work, both Ms Biant and Ms Greening talked through their backgrounds, and learning and career history.

The visitors highlighted the world of Science is open to everyone and young people with STEMM qualifications are in demand in the job market and have good long term career prospects with a wide variety of opportunities. They wanted our students to know people with STEMM skills can make a big contribution to many of the big challenges facing society today.

As well as looking at their ever-changing offices – including operating theatres, research labs and sport fields – students heard about different patient stories, the variety in a typical medical team, and also got hands on with a selection of orthopaedic medical equipment.

Suzanne Vickers, Science Teacher, said:

“This was an exciting opportunity for our students to explore the fascinating world of STEMM and to start thinking about options available to them.”
