Reach for the Future

Year 8 take part in a STEM careers event

The ‘Reach for the Future’ careers programme culminated today in a special STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) employer event.

Year 8 students met a series of employees from local business including construction companies Laing O’Rouke and KIER, as well as mechanical & electrical consulting engineers TACE and science careers company Cogent Skills.

Each volunteer talked to groups of students about their jobs and employers; students were then encouraged to ask questions to find about more qualifications and skills required for each role, a typical day at work or opportunities for promotions.

Another key part of the day was to break down the stereotypes and encourage more females to look at careers in construction and science.  One volunteer asked students to help her draw a typical scientist and the results were interesting – there were many drawings of older males.

The aim of the whole Reach for the Future programme, which has run all academic year, is to prepare and inspire young people and to increase students’ knowledge of STEM subjects and the careers which they relate to.

Amy Barlow, Head of Careers said:

“This has been a fantastic education and careers programme, which has increased our students’ general employability skills, STEM knowledge and also introduced a whole range of interesting career options.”
