Safer Internet Day (SID)

Academy promotes online safety on SID2017

It is Safer Internet Day today! The international holiday promotes safer and more responsible use of online technology and mobile phones across the world.

To raise awareness of the day, Salford City Academy students have been creating computer programs that translate internet slang for parents and support them in protecting children online.

Our Year 9 students are writing code and creating a special computer program, which can be used by parents to decipher what their children are really talking about to their friends and other young people.

Internet slang (abbreviations) can be used as a way of covering up the context of online conversations between young people, for example, 'POS' for 'parent over shoulder' and '(L)MIRL’ for 'let's meet in real life' or more innocent terms ‘BRB’ for ‘be right back’ and ‘LOL’ for ‘laugh out loud’.

Martin Shearer, Teacher of ICT, said:

“By creating these programs, not only are we addressing internet safety in lesson, we would also like to raise awareness for parents about the use of these suspicious acronyms online.”

Year 7 and 8 students will be participating in e-safety role play games in lessons, tackling scenarios to learn how to stay safe online.
