SCA Students Set For Success With Art Visit

Our Year 10 students enjoyed finding out about what it takes to become a successful film and television set designer during a recent visit to the University of Salford as part of the Art studies.

The group were given the opportunity as part of the ‘Encounters’ programme, which enables students to find out more about potential career pathways in Art and Design at further education level.

Prior to their trip, an expert from University of Salford visited the class, delivering a brief introduction to what a degree course on set design entails. They then had a go at making their own miniature sets out of card based on TV and movie themes – you can have a look at some of the results in our photo gallery!

The following week, our students visited the University of Salford campus to find out more information first hand. They received a tour of the facilities, including the art workshops, editing suites and lecture theatres, before looking at examples of students’ work. Their trip concluded with a practical exercise that saw them create flat plan drawings and learn more about how those are eventually developed into models.

Salford City Academy Art Teacher Mr Bartholomew said: “This was an excellent opportunity for our students, who really made the most of the experience. It has certainly opened a few eyes with regards to possibilities for future studies and careers within the Art and Design sector!

“Thank you so much to University of Salford and the Encounters programme for inviting us to take part in this wonderful exercise.”

Our next step on the encounters programme will look at illustration as a vocational pathway, with students set to visit professional illustrator Stan Chow at Manchester Metropolitan University in March.
