Salford City Academy Recognised as School of Sanctuary

Salford City Academy has received the School of Sanctuary Award for promoting a welcoming and inclusive envrinoment

Salford City Academy is proud to be a School Of Character, and both staff and students feel that our school is a warm, welcoming place that celebrates our diverse cultures and heritages.

The Student Leaders have led on this throughout the year. They have helped to organise Chinese New Year celebrations, Black History Month, Refugee Week, Easter celebrations, Ramadan messages, Eid celebrations and Christmas celebrations. We also held a Community Iftar, where we invited community members in to break their fast together during the month of Ramadan. We hosted local primary students in to watch our Culture Show, where SCA students dressed in their traditional clothing and spoke about their countries. We have also recently held a Culture Day at SCA, where students spent the day exploring different cultures through food, music, dance, art and much more.

As a school we have worked hard to give every student and staff member a sense of purpose and belonging. Our work has been recognised through being awarded a School of Sanctuary Status. This award recognises our commitment to fostering a welcoming culture, a strong sense of belonging, and solidarity with those seeking safety.

We recently had an evaluation panel from the organisation arrive in school, they were met by Craig and Hanna, our Head Students, in reception. They conducted a tour of our school, going into lessons and speaking to our students. They then met a group of Student Leaders who gave a short presentation and answered a series of questions from the panel.

Head judge Natalie Stables said

'It was an absolute honour to read your application and visit your school this week. The inclusive work that you are doing for your children and families is incredible and it is clear that you are providing a warm, welcoming and safe place for all, including any asylum or refugee children which may arrive. Your young people were awesome!'

On Wednesday 9th July, some of our students were invited to a School of Sanctuary Award ceremony, and continued to make us proud by presenting to eight primary schools about the culture and values of SCA. They proudly collected the award on behalf of every student and staff member at the Academy. A huge thank you and well done to the students who delivered the presentation for being such positive role models.
