Modern Foreign Languages

In Years 7 and 8, pupils develop their speaking and reading skills from the start. They are exposed to listening texts by native speakers from audio material. They have opportunities to develop writing skills with support. Pupils start learning about themselves, interests that affect their lives and their family. They progress to talking about their home life and routines, their hometown and leisure activities. They complete the course looking at food and drink and holidays. There is emphasis on establishing good understanding of how a language works and grammar.

From Year 9, pupils have opportunities to develop reading skills from extended texts and comprehension activities. The course of study covers healthy lifestyles, personal relationships and leisure activities. The course progresses with a detailed study of their home and environmental issues. Education and future career plans mark the final context of study. By the end of year 9, pupils are fully equipped with the language needed to begin the AQA GCSE course.
