Pioneer Programme & STEM on Track Header

The Pioneer Programme

The Pioneer Programme launched in September 2024, with our first Year 7 cohort taking part in STEM On Track - a unique initiative that empowers students to design, build, and race their own kart in an exciting national schools’ STEM competition. Our second Pioneer cohort has now taken on the project themselves, continuing the momentum and enthusiasm from last year.

STEM On Track

This unique STEM project integrates hands-on engineering, problem-solving, and teamwork, inspiring the next generation of innovators. Whether your focus is on practical learning, STEM careers, or real-world applications, STEM On Track delivers an unforgettable educational experience for schools across the UK.

STEM On Track Grand Prix Final June 2025

A team of talented students from Salford City Academy’s Pioneer Programme secured 2nd place at the prestigious STEM On Track Grand Prix, held in July 2025 at the Whilton Mill Karting Circuit in Northampton.

The Year 7 students, supported by local engineering firm Farrat, took part in the final stage of a 12-month national STEM initiative developed by Espire Education. The programme challenged students to design, build, and brand their own go-kart from scratch, blending engineering, creativity, and teamwork into a truly immersive learning experience.

After months of dedication, innovation, and collaboration, the students competed against schools from across the country, racing their custom-built go-kart in a thrilling finale that tested both design and driving skills.
