Whole School Curriculum Intent

At Salford City Academy, our broad and balanced curriculum aims to provide an excellent education for all students; one that fosters a love of learning and a high achievement culture. We have a three-year Key Stage 3 curriculum to ensure that students are exposed to a wide variety of subject disciplines in appropriate depth before they personalise their curriculum through selecting option subjects for Year 10.

Our curriculum will liberate and empower students by exposing them to the best that has been thought and said in each of the rich subject disciplines, exposing students to content that they would not otherwise have learned. It will provide students with the confidence to understand and shape the world around them, to be active and economically self-sufficient citizens, and to enter into the conversation of humankind.

To help students achieve their full potential, we have developed a knowledge-rich curriculum that is cohesive, cumulative, and purposefully sequenced. It is academic, rigorous, challenging, and has been designed to ensure that students know more, remember more and can do more in each subject area. The curriculum is progressive across years and key stages, ensuring that students are able to make excellent progress over time.

At Salford City Academy, we believe the curriculum should act as both a mirror and a window, reflecting students' experiences and exposing them to the wider world. It is deliberately planned to link to both the local context and the school community. Our curriculum explicitly teaches, promotes, and reinforces fundamental British Values such as diversity and tolerance through discrete PSHE and Citizenship lessons and across the range of curriculum subjects.

Salford City Academy is part of the United Learning group. Our curriculum is underpinned by the following fundamental principles.

  • Entitlement: All students at Salford City Academy have the right to experience and learn the full curriculum, ensuring equity of access for all, including SEND and disadvantaged students.
  • Coherence: Our curriculum is carefully sequenced, building powerful knowledge term by term and making meaningful connections within and between subjects to ensure the long-term retention of knowledge.
  • Mastery: Foundational knowledge, skills, and concepts are secured before progressing, with students revisiting prior learning and applying it in new contexts.
  • Adaptability: While the core content of our curriculum is stable, lessons are adapted and brough to life by teacher in order to meet the needs of all classes and students.
  • Representation: The curriculum reflects students' experiences and takes them beyond their immediate context. The curriculum is planned to ensure that all students see themselves within it.
  • Education with Character: We firmly believe in educating the whole child at Salford City Academy, both academically and in a wider sense. Our co-curricular programme and the school's ethos spark curiosity and nourish both the head and heart. This includes character education, spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development and the ‘hidden curriculum’ of the school
