Science is taking the natural curiosity in the world around us, and helping to understand it.  At Salford City Academy, we endeavour to allow students to experience the wonder of the world around us through exploration and discovery, collaborating to solve problems and gain an insight into how science has developed and its relevance in your everyday life and into the future.

Years 7 and 8

In Year 7 and 8 all pupils study an integrated Science course in line with the new national curriculum. The course is split into units rotating between the 3 core disciplines of science; biology, chemistry and physics.

We study topics such as space, forces, chemical reactions, elements and compounds, classification and human reproduction. Each topic will focus on theoretical content and, where possible, we take a practical approach with the pupils investigating science problems and relating the science they learn to everyday experiences.

Each topic will incorporate the work of scientists relevant to that theme. For example, the work of Watson, Crick, Wilkins and Franklin in relation to the development of the DNA model. Our pupils will be given opportunity to explore in detail about the discoveries and research of influential scientists and understand how they have impacted on their own lives today.

Science homework will be set regularly each week through research projects or the use of homework booklets to consolidate the work done during lessons.

Years 9, 10 and 11

Key Stage 4 starts in Year 9 in Science; therefore from Years 9 to 11 the new Combined Science GCSE will be covered including practical and investigative work.  This new GCSE is 100% terminal assessment so there is no coursework element.

In Year 10 and 11 students at Salford City Academy are studying GCSE Core and Additional Science at KS4 achieving two GCSEs that incorporate core concepts of Biology, Chemistry and Physics, with the option of Triple Science selection in Year 10 achieving three GCSEs in the separate fields of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Both routes follow the AQA syllabus and comprise of 75% externally assessed examinations and 25% internally assessed coursework units.

Some pupils in Year 10 study for the Edexcel BTEC Level ½ First Award in the Principles of Applied Science and in Year 11 the Edexcel BTEC Level ½ First Award in the Applications of Applied Science.  These courses are 75% assignment based with 25% examination.  Pupils complete 10 assignments that are set in context each year.

How will this subject help me in the future?

Many of the issues in Science are part of everyday life, studying Science will help you make important decisions in the future. Combined Science-Double Award and Separate Science will help anyone wishing to study Sciences further at A level, (Biology, Chemistry or Physics). It will lay a good foundation for a career in medicine, nursing, sports science, marine biology, zoology, dentistry, engineering, environmental sciences, computer science, mechanics or astrophysics.
