Thanks to the generosity of the English National Opera, our Year 9 Music Enrichment students enjoyed a special trip to The Lowry to see Benjamin Britten’s Albert Herring. This witty and heartwarming opera offered students a rare opportunity to experience professional performance, explore themes of self-discovery, and build their cultural capital.
Last Wednesday, our students took the trip to The Lowry theatre. It was a brilliant experience, one that many of our students might never have experienced on their own.
Albert Herring tells the story of a shy, obedient young man named Albert who is chosen as May King in his village, a role traditionally reserved for virtuous girls. The opera follows Albert as he discovers independence and self-confidence, leading to humorous and heartwarming events.
For many of our students, this was their first time attending a live opera performance. The opportunity to witness professional musicians, singers, and stagecraft in action was both inspiring and eye-opening. It offered a valuable chance to deepen their understanding of musical storytelling and broaden their cultural horizons.
We look forward to offering more experiences like this that spark curiosity, creativity, and a lifelong appreciation for the performing arts.
